A Chance for Redemption
Special Ring and Nothing To Lose will try to rebound from poor tries in the Breeders’ Cup Mile when they take on nine others in the $400,000 Citation Handicap at Hollywood Park.
A Grade I at 1 1/16 miles, the Citation is the third race in the track’s three-day, six-race Turf Festival. Today’s card also includes the $100,000 Generous for 2-year-olds at a mile.
Special Ring didn’t handle the yielding turf course at Lone Star Park on Oct. 30, finishing 13th in the field of 14. He was eighth in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita.
Successful in 10 of 27 in his career, Special Ring has won twice in seven tries at Hollywood Park.
Nothing To Lose finished 11th in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. A winner of six of 14, the 4-year-old Sky Classic colt will be ridden by Edgar Prado and is three for three at today’s distance. He is trained by Bobby Frankel, who will also send out Leroidesanimaux.
Race of the day: Pico Central, the frontrunner in the race for the Eclipse award as the country’s top sprinter, heads a field of nine in today’s $350,000 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct. Victor Espinoza will ride the 5-year-old in the Grade I against Unforgettable Max, Potrisunrise, Purge, Lion Tamer, Badge Of Silver, Voodoo, Kela and During. The Aqueduct card also includes the $200,000 Demoiselle for 2-year-old fillies and the $200,000 Remsen for 2-year-olds.
One for the road: Strength And Honor should be difficult to handle in today’s 10th at Churchill Downs, the $70,800 Distorted Humor Handicap. Eddie Castro will ride the 5-year-old Carson City gelding in the 6 1/2 -furlong race.
Exotically speaking: A pick three using Too Much To Love in the third, Olympic Light and Zoolu Nights in the fourth and Ulterior Motives, French Polo, Ibero Grace and Slew City Citadel in the fifth.
