Long Beach Wilson Wins Tournament
Matt Sagehorn scored four goals and Cody Walter and Joe Sherrin added three each to lead Long Beach Wilson to a 13-7 victory over Corona del Mar in the championship match of the Tru- West Memorial Cup boys’ water polo tournament Saturday at San Jose Bellarmine High.
Wilson (21-2), ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll, built a 10-3 lead at halftime. Anthony Salazar had three goals to lead the Bruins past Bellarmine, 6-5, in the semifinals.
Corona del Mar, ranked No. 4 in Division I, was led by Thomas Pearson’s five goals in the final.
The Sea Kings defeated Santa Ana Foothill, ranked second in Division I, in the semifinals. Corona del Mar was led by Tom Money with three goals and Jacob Murphy and Pearson with two each.
Bellarmine edged Foothill, 9-8, in the third-place game.
North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, ranked third in Division I, took fifth place with a 9-6 victory over Newport Harbor, No. 6 in Division I.
Atherton Menlo (24-5) was the second-highest Northern California finisher Saturday, taking seventh place with a 10-6 victory over Lake Forest El Toro, ranked fifth in Division I.
