Wizards Dispatch Earthquakes
Jack Jewsbury’s goal in injury time gave host Kansas City a 3-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night, sending the Wizards to the Western Conference final with a 3-2 victory in the home-and-home, total-goals series.
After losing, 2-0, to the Earthquakes on Oct. 24, Kansas City appeared to have at least forced overtime when it led, 2-0, late in the second half of Saturday’s game.
Then, in the second minute of injury time, Jewsbury received a pass from Igor Simutenkov just outside the penalty area and shot the ball in off the left post.
Khari Stephenson, making his first pro start, also scored for Kansas City on Saturday, and San Jose’s Brian Ching’s own goal tied the series in the 48th minute.
The Wizards will play host to the Galaxy on Friday night in the conference final.
D.C. United 2, MetroStars 0 -- Jaime Moreno and Bryan Namoff scored late in the second half at Washington to help United advance to the Eastern Conference final.
Freddy Adu had an assist in his first career playoff appearance for United, which won the home-and-home, total-goals series 4-0.
United beat the MetroStars, 2-0, Oct. 23 at East Rutherford, N.J.
Adu went into the game in the 79th minute and quickly helped United take the lead. He used his speed to beat the defense down the left side and played a perfect pass to the far post, where Moreno scored into an open net in the 85th minute.
United scored in the 89th minute when Namoff converted a rebound after Dema Kovalenko’s free kick.
United will play Columbus or New England next weekend in the conference final.
