The Proper Punishment

With all due respect to the efforts by his defense attorney (Sept. 18), I would hope that James Abernathy spends the rest of his life incarcerated for torturing and killing his pet dog to spite his ex-girlfriend. Anybody who beats a living being with a golf club, whether human or animal, drives a stake through her heart and decapitates her should be separated from those in our society who respect all life. Animal cruelty laws are woefully inadequate, offering little incentive to refrain from injuring those that cannot speak for themselves. Sanity will be on holiday if this man receives as little as three years for this heinous act.
