College President to Quit Over Revoked Donation

The president of Saint Mary’s College announced his resignation Tuesday in the wake of the disclosure that a $112-million pledge fell through. Brother Craig Franz said his decision to step down Jan. 1 was in the school’s best interest.
Saint Mary’s officials built a $26-million science center on the Moraga campus based on a 1997 pledge from Conrad Colbrandt, who now says the money won’t be given because he was the victim of a real estate scam. That loss has forced the school to scale back renovation and construction plans.
