They’re Returning to an Old Haunt

The official Pfister Hotel website describes it as “the premier hotel in downtown Milwaukee” complete with a “world-class Victorian art collection.”

No mention of ghosts.

The Dodgers are staying two nights in a 112-year-old hotel many players believe is haunted. At least that’s what they say.

“It’s old, weird and scary,” Eric Gagne said. “It’s very creepy. I don’t sleep well there.”

After his first night at the Pfister in 2001, former Dodger third baseman Adrian Beltre reported a ghostly presence turning on lights and tickling his toes.

“I don’t want to hear about it,” pitcher Buddy Carlyle said.

So, why are they staying at the Pfister again?

“There aren’t many options in Milwaukee,” Gagne said.

Leaving Vero Beach, Fla., and spending the last few days with the Dodgers might have been the biggest step so far in Brad Penny’s rehabilitation from a biceps nerve injury.

“I had more adrenaline throwing in the bullpen [Friday] than any time since September,” he said.

He has been amazed at the prolific Dodger offense and wants to benefit from the hot bats before they cool. “We are crushing the ball,” he said. “It’s unbelievable.”

Penny will make a start today for the triple-A Las Vegas 51s against Colorado Springs. He is expected to throw about 80 pitches.

Fans wanting to watch games tonight at Milwaukee and Wednesday at San Diego must break out the remote and channel surf. Neither game will be televised by FSN West 2. Because of Fox scheduling conflicts, the games will be televised by cable and satellite operators on their local channels. Thus, the games will be shown on seven channels covering much of Southern California.
