Homicide detectives arrested a 23-year-old Rosemead man Thursday on suspicion of murder in the death of a high school student gunned down a block from his San Gabriel campus.

Authorities did not cite a possible motive for Wednesday’s killing. But at least one witness said there was a loud street quarrel between the victim, 17-year-old Ryan Dasalla, and the occupants of a van who drove up to him moments before the 2 p.m. shooting near Gabrielino High School, said San Gabriel police spokeswoman Mitsi Komatsu.

Gabriel Guerrero was arrested at 1 a.m. by Los Angeles County sheriff’s homicide detectives. He was being held on $1-million bail and is to be arraigned Monday.

Officers called to the scene in the 1400 block of South Gladys Avenue found Dasalla dead or near death, Komatsu said.

The shooting of the Gabrielino High senior, a resident of Rosemead, mystified school authorities. Kathy Gay, a spokeswoman for the San Gabriel Unified School District, said Dasalla was “active on campus.”

Officials said more arrests were possible.
