When Singhalese finished third in the American Oaks on July 3, the 3-year-old Singspiel filly was one of the longshots at 43-1 in the Grade 1.

Bidding for her first win in her fourth U.S. start today at Del Mar, Singhalese will be a much, much shorter price when she goes in the seventh, a $60,000 optional claimer at 1 1/16 miles on turf. The race is part of a pick six with a carry-over of more than $213,000.

Owned by Gould Family Trust and trained by Jim Cassidy, Singhalese has competed in nothing but graded stakes since arriving from England. She finished fourth in both the Providencia, a Grade III, and the Honeymoon Breeders’ Cup Handicap, a Grade II, before chasing Cesario and Melhor Ainda in the American Oaks.

Jockey Mike Smith, who picked up his first win of the meet Friday when longshot Seasonal King went wire-to-wire in the fifth race, has the call on Singhalese.

The hottest filly in the field is Fortunate Event, a California-bred daughter of Event Of The Year, who has won two in a row on the grass for owner Dan Agnew and trainer Jerry Fanning. Rounding out the field are Isla Cozzene, Veela, Single Market, Dramatic, Andrea’s Wish, Princess Ezra, Homecoming and Agua De Mayo.

Race of the day: Artie Schiller is reunited with jockey Richard Migliore as he tries to end a two-race losing streak in the $150,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap today at Saratoga. A winner of eight of 16 and nearly $791,000, Artie Schiller, a 4-year-old El Prado colt, will start favored in the Grade II at 1 1/8 miles on turf. Jimmy Jerkens trains Artie Schiller for Timber Bay Farm and Mrs. Thomas Walsh. The race is part of a pick six with a carry-over of more than $77,000.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Gray Black N White, No Socks Doc and Indian Country in the sixth, Singhalese in the seventh and Gilded Bertrando, Manhattan Express, Rushing Wild and Gold Bankers Gold in the eighth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 5/33. Money: Previous day/meet total: $37.60/$202. Total money bet: $192.
