Padres Get Even With 3-2 Victory
The Washington Nationals held a closed-door clubhouse meeting for more than 1 1/2 hours Saturday at Washington, then went out and lost another one-run decision, 3-2 to the San Diego Padres on Joe Randa’s RBI double in the seventh inning.
The West Division-leading Padres raised their record back to .500 (55-55), while the Nationals fell to 6-16 since the All-Star break. They were 24-8 in one-run games on July 8; they’re 0-13 since.
Pedro Astacio (1-2), who had lost five consecutive decisions for Texas and San Diego, earned his first victory for the Padres, giving up two runs and four hits in six innings.
With the score tied at 2-2, pinch-hitter Eric Young doubled to lead off the seventh. Ryan Drese had a 2-2 count on Dave Roberts when Manager Frank Robinson replaced him with Joey Eischen, who struck out Roberts with his first pitch. But the next batter, Randa, doubled to left.

Atlanta 8, St. Louis 1 -- Tim Hudson gave up one run in seven innings for his 100th win, while Andruw Jones homered twice, one a grand slam, at St. Louis. Hudson (8-6) walked one and yielded six hits to earn his first victory since July 16. Jones’ slam in the sixth inning gave him 35 homers, most in the majors.

San Francisco 5, Houston 2 -- Noah Lowry (7-11) yielded one hit -- a single -- in seven scoreless innings to help the Giants win a home series for the first time since May. They’ve also won three games in a row for the first time since June 28-July 1. The Giants won their first series at SBC Park since taking two of three from the Dodgers May 24-26.

New York 2, Chicago 0 -- Jae Seo, recalled from triple-A Norfolk to make the start, outpitched Greg Maddux at Shea Stadium. Seo (3-1) yielded four hits in 7 1/3 innings, sending the Cubs to their fourth loss in a row and fifth in the last six games. Maddux (8-9) was bidding for his 314th win to tie Gaylord Perry for 16th place on the career list.

Cincinnati 4, Florida 3 -- The last five runs of the game at Cincinnati were scored on wild pitches or outs. Adam Dunn scored the decisive run in the sixth inning on Rich Aurilia’s grounder to second baseman Luis Castillo.

Philadelphia 8, Milwaukee 2 -- Jon Lieber (10-10) pitched seven strong innings at Philadelphia, yielding seven hits, two runs and walking one. Brewer starter Chris Capuano (12-7) lost for the first time since June 13 -- a span of 10 starts.

Colorado 14, Arizona 7 -- Ryan Shealy drove in four runs and Dustan Mohr hit a two-run homer to highlight a five-run fourth inning for the Rockies at Phoenix.
