Kenneth O. Rhodes, 93; Lawyer, Trustee Was Active in Community
Kenneth O. Rhodes, 93, a lawyer and trustee of Scripps College in Claremont who thrice trekked the Himalayas, died of natural causes Tuesday at his Pasadena home, said his son, Ted.
His involvement in the community was deliberate.
“In 1948, I made a commitment to give one-third of my day to pro bono work -- work for the community,” he told The Times in 1984.
In 1984, Rhodes was named the nation’s outstanding private university trustee by the Assn. of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges.
He often ended up running the boards on which he served, including those of Scripps, the Thacher School, the Hathaway Home for Children and the Valley Hunt Club.
A graduate of Stanford University, Rhodes earned his law degree from Harvard University and served in the Navy during World War II.
He had his own Los Angeles law firm for more than 30 years before he joined Taylor, Kupfer, Summers & Rhodes in 1979.
