President Says Two Officials Fired for Spying

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said two high-ranking government officials had been fired after they were caught spying. He did not name them or the countries for which they allegedly spied.

Karzai made the disclosure in an address to the nation’s new parliament. He blamed unidentified foreign powers for decades of fighting in his country, and said some Afghans had become tools in the hands of foreigners, perpetuating unrest to make money. He did not name any country, although Afghan officials frequently accuse Pakistan of interfering in their affairs.
