Opposition Alleges Balloting Irregularities

Opposition leaders in Tajikistan alleged widespread irregularities as voters went to the polls to choose a new parliament.
Rahmatullo Zoirov, leader of the opposition Social Democratic Party, said his party’s observers had recorded “a vast number of violations” favoring the party of President Emamali Rakhmonov. Zoirov promised to make the details public Tuesday.
Election officials said the turnout was 77.1% by 4 p.m. Preliminary results were expected today.
