Is Avery Fighting to Save the NHL?

Sean Avery for president of the NHLPA.

Maybe Jeremy Roenick’s comments got the NHL some headlines, but no matter how much he insisted what he said was misinterpreted, it was still the wrong thing fans wanted to hear.

Then along comes Sean Avery. He’s not nearly the recognizable figure that Roenick is, but, hopefully, his words -- “We owe the fans everything” -- are more representative of the rank and file of the NHLPA.

These are the words that should have come out of Roenick’s mouth. And now maybe the players will see union chief Bob Goodenow for the cancer that he is. Thank you, Sean, for sounding like someone who really cares.

Nice apology, Mr. Avery, but quite honestly, the thing I want to hear is that my season seats (I am still not sure if I even will buy them again) are reduced 50%. Otherwise I will take my dollars (tickets, beer, pizza, jerseys, parking, etc.) somewhere else.

Good to know how sorry the Kings’ Sean Avery is about the NHL lockout, but did he apologize for playing last season in the minor United Hockey League? Not only did he take a job away from a lesser player who no doubt needed it more (all the while hypocritically railing against would-be replacement players who would dare to take his NHL job), but the league had a mandatory salary cap.

Yes, the exact same salary cap he and the rest of the NHL players were fundamentally against for reasons only they know. I trust the next person to see the twisted logic in this stand will also be the first.
