Re “He shot at cops -- don’t forget it,” Current, July 24

As a person who achieved the rank of sharpshooter in basic training in World War II, I believed for a moment that “Jack Dunphy” was about to answer the question he quoted from Rep. Maxine Waters: “I just wonder, if 11 well-trained police officers, including some from the sharpshooting elite SWAT team, could not have disabled this supposedly crazy and confused man” -- a question I and everyone I spoke to wished would be answered with regard to the killing of the little girl.

In truly presidential style, Dunphy completely brushed off this question, expressing outrage that it should even be asked. Will The Times ever provide an answer to the question and perhaps find a calmer, more responsive police officer?
