No sympathy for Yosemite climbers

Regarding “Edged Out” [July 19]: We all have to follow rules. If the rangers in Yosemite let the climbing population do whatever they want, they should also let other visitors do what they please.

I don’t agree with bums loitering in my local city parks. Why should I feel any sympathy for the climbing vagabonds of Yosemite? Kick them out.

How pretentious of the rock climber who says rock climbers have a “special relationship to Yosemite” that others don’t. The only people with a special relationship are the Indians who used the valley for survival, not recreation.

Just because you climb a rock doesn’t give you special rights over others. The enjoyment of Yosemite is equally genuine. There is a 30-day camping limit per year in Yosemite; follow the rules.

The story presented a very sympathetic view of the climbing culture of Yosemite’s Camp 4, but it glossed over one of the primary concerns: crime. I believe it was Lynn Hill who published a memoir outlining the crimes that she and the climbers of Camp 4 committed to indulge in their job-free lifestyles.

While I am not concerned with a little extracurricular camping or slack lines, I have zero tolerance for crime or drug use in our national parks. I believe it is perfectly appropriate to require the climbers and users of Camp 4 to adhere to park policies.
