Man Arrested in Fatal Shooting of Officer
A 23-year-old Newark, Calif., man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of shooting and killing a police officer who was investigating a loitering complaint.
Irving Ramirez was taken into custody in Daly City, south of San Francisco, after a statewide manhunt.
San Leandro Police Officer Nels “Dan” Niemi, 42, was shot about 10:50 p.m. Monday.
Niemi was talking to a group of young men when a car drove up and an occupant opened fire, authorities said.
No motive has been determined.
Niemi was the first San Leandro officer killed in the line of duty in nearly 40 years.
