All Eyes on Memorette
After running in four consecutive Grade I races, Memorette steps into an easier spot today when she takes on seven other 3-year-old fillies in the $175,000 Hollywood Breeders’ Cup Oaks at Hollywood Park.
Owned by Betty Currin and trained by her husband, Bill, Memorette, a daughter of Memo, began her string of Grade I appearances with a second to Sharp Lisa in the Las Virgenes on Feb. 12 at Santa Anita. She followed with another runner-up try behind Sweet Catomine in the Santa Anita Oaks, then went to Kentucky and finished third in the Ashland at Keeneland and fifth in the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs.
A winner of two of 11 and nearly $365,000, Memorette is the 2-1 favorite on Russ Hudak’s morning line and will be ridden for the first time by Alex Solis.
The 5-2 second choice is Leave Me Alone, a California-bred daughter of Bold Badgett who has won three of five and stretched out successfully with a four-length victory in the Melair at today’s distance on April 24.
Race of the day: Bank Audit, who has won four of six in 2005, will try for her third Grade II win of the year against nine other fillies and mares in today’s $150,000 Vagrancy Handicap at Belmont Park. Norberto Arroyo Jr. will ride the 4-year-old Wild Rush filly for owner Robert Amendola and trainer Frank Laboccetta Jr. in the 6 1/2 -furlong race. Other contenders include Forty Moves, Pleasant Home, Friendly Michelle and Sensibly Chic, who was beaten by a nose by Bank Audit in the Genuine Risk Handicap on May 14.
One for the road: Jockey Mark Guidry and trainer Dale Romans have been on fire at Churchill Downs and can score a mild upset with a debuting 2-year-old named Joint Effort in today’s 10th. The daughter of Runaway Groom will run on Lasix and will break from post two in the $47,100 maiden affair at 5 1/2 furlongs.
Exotically speaking: A late pick four using Follow The Rainbow, Canteen and Viziership in the sixth; Dealer Choice, Minister Blair and Celtic Mojo in the seventh; Leave Me Alone in the eighth; and Excessive Susan, Suicidal Blonde and Heavenly Place in the ninth.
Winners: Previous day/meet total: 1/90 Money: Previous day/meet total: $4.30/$444.10. Total money bet: $656.
