Two Veteran Geldings Try to Turn Back Clock

A couple of veteran geldings will be trying to turn back the clock in today’s second race at Santa Anita. It is not part of the pick six, which has a $98,347 carry-over.

Full Moon Madness and Bluesthestandard, who have combined for 30 victories and earnings of $2,116,023, drop into a $40,000 claimer in hopes of ending extended losing streaks.

Since the beginning of 2004, Full Moon Madness and Bluesthestandard have combined for all of one win. Bluesthestandard picked up the victory, winning the 2004 Palos Verdes by one length over Marino Marini and five others.

No better than second twice in eight subsequent races, Bluesthestandard will be cutting back to six furlongs this afternoon as he seeks his ninth win at Santa Anita. Martin Pedroza will ride the 8-year-old son of American Standard for owner Jeffrey Sengara and trainer Ted H. West.

Full Moon Madness, who hasn’t won since 2003, is back on dirt for leading trainer Doug O’Neill after finishing eighth of 10 on the grass on March 13. He has won five times over the local main.

Race of the day: Wend, unbeaten in two races on the grass, will try to stay perfect for Claiborne Farm and trainer Bill Mott in today’s ninth at Gulfstream Park. The 4-year-old Pulpit filly, who won an allowance race by 8 1/4 lengths in her first start over the Gulfstream turf on Feb. 18, will be ridden by Jerry Bailey in the $35,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles. Other contenders in the race include recent winner Spiritual Drift, Minge Cove and Bonaire, who will be making her first start for trainer Barclay Tagg.

One for the road: Jazzy Queen looked good breaking her maiden March 11 at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans and should be competitive in her first against winners in today’s fifth at Aqueduct. Rafael Bejarano will ride the 3-year-old Wavering Monarch filly for owner Michael Gill and trainer Gamaliel Vazquez in the $20,000 claimer at 6 1/2 furlongs.
