Reversed Call Lifts Monarchs to Win
A basket at the buzzer was disallowed after a video review to give the Sacramento Monarchs a 67-66 victory Sunday over the Minnesota Lynx at Minneapolis.
Nicole Ohlde’s layup at the end of the game was originally counted, but WNBA referee Bryan Enterline reversed the decision after reviewing tape.
“To come down to officials is very disappointing,” Minnesota Coach Suzie McConnell Serio said.
Yolanda Griffith had 18 points and DeMya Walker added 15 for the Monarchs (3-0), who stayed in first place in the Western Conference, a half game ahead of Houston.
Katie Smith had a game-high 23 points for the Lynx (1-2), who took a 66-65 lead with 1:31 left on another shot by Ohlde. Griffith responded with a scoop shot with 25 seconds left.
“DeMya penetrated and everybody went to her,” Griffith said. “They just forgot to guard me.”
After Sacramento’s Nicole Powell missed two free throws, Ohlde was alone under the basket, but her layup came too late.
Seattle 79, San Antonio 51 -- Lauren Jackson scored 21 points and Sue Bird added 18 points, five assists and no turnovers in the Storm’s victory at Seattle.
After missing her first four shots, Jackson finished with an eight-for-16 night and made all five of her free throws. Betty Lennox added 12 points for the Storm (2-1), and Bird finished four for five on three-point shots.
Wendy Palmer-Daniel had nine points for the Silver Stars (0-4), who trailed, 36-25, at halftime and had 20 turnovers.
Houston 86, Indiana 78 -- Sheryl Swoopes scored 31 points, including 12 in the second overtime, to lift the Comets (3-1) at Houston.
Tamika Catchings led Indiana (3-1) with 20 points.
The Fever trailed, 60-51, with four minutes left in regulation, but came back to send the game into overtime with a three-point shot by Catchings that tied the score, at 63-63, with 13 seconds left. Swoopes’ jump shot at the end of regulation hit the front of the rim and bounced away.
After the first overtime, the score was tied, 67-67.
Then, in the second overtime, Houston went on a 10-0 run behind seven consecutive points from Swoopes and a three-point play by Dominique Canty.
