Orioles Slam the Red Sox
Rodrigo Lopez and the Baltimore Orioles shook off their weekend troubles and shut down the hot-hitting Boston Red Sox.
Lopez won his second start in a row after a long winless stretch, and the Orioles broke a season-high, three-game losing streak with an 8-1 victory Monday night at Boston.
David Newhan hit his first career grand slam and drove in five runs, and Baltimore built a 7-0 lead after three innings against Bronson Arroyo (4-2), who got only eight outs.
“I was just trying to put the barrel on [the pitch],” Newhan said. “And when I do that better things happen than when I’m really trying to go out and do too much, which I’ve probably been doing.”
Lopez (4-2) gave up only one run and six hits in eight innings. He was 0-2 in seven starts after beating the New York Yankees on April 10, then defeated Seattle 3-1 last Wednesday.
Seattle 4, Toronto 3 -- Jamie Moyer pitched six solid innings for his 131st win with the Mariners, passing Randy Johnson to become the club’s leader in a victory over the Blue Jays at Seattle. Moyer, 42, improved to 5-2 this season.
Oakland 5, Tampa Bay 4 -- Mark Kotsay drove home Marco Scutaro with a two-out single in the 11th inning at Oakland, and the Athletics, who tied the game in the ninth, ended their eight-game losing streak.
