Destroying wilderness
Re “Some Fear a Vast Sell-Off of U.S. Land,” Nov. 16
Reps. Richard W. Pombo (R-Tracy) and Jim Gibbons (R-Nevada) have in mind the destruction of our wilderness system. Their plan would fragment natural areas, rendering impossible wide-area habitat restoration and species protection. Fine, they say: All the better to run snowmobiles and dune buggies, build wilderness strip malls and, surely, better for our campaign donors to make a buck. Pandering to special interests with America’s land is a crime against nature and all of us.
