Oregon State Finds a Way

Oregon State quarterback Matt Moore was scrambling, trying to find a way out of what looked like a certain loss at the hands of Washington State’s defense.

Then he saw a welcome sight -- receiver Mike Hass.

Moore’s favorite target pulled down his throw and ran it into the end zone on a 63-yard pass play that was the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter of Oregon State’s 44-33 victory over Washington State at Corvallis, Ore.

“I just wheeled it up the sideline and nobody was there,” said Hass, who finished with seven catches for 161 yards.

Hass has nine consecutive games with at least 100 yards receiving.

The Beavers, 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Pacific 10 Conference, had lost two in a row -- to Louisville and Arizona State -- going into the game against the Cougars (3-1, 0-1), which built first-half leads of 24-10 and 30-16.

Going into the game Hass led the nation with an average of 167.5 yards receiving.

“It was an amazing play. It was a big day for us, we needed to get this win,” Oregon State Coach Mike Riley said about the Moore-to-Hass touchdown. “Matt made a good play to get away from the rush, and those two guys played football.”

Washington State’s Alex Brink completed 31 of 59 passes for a school-record 531 yards and a touchdown, but four of his passes were intercepted.

No. 12 California 28, Arizona 0 -- Marshawn Lynch ran for 107 yards and a touchdown at Berkeley as Cal shut out Arizona for a second consecutive year.

Joe Ayoob threw for two scores and ran for one for the Golden Bears (5-0, 2-0), who are off to their best start since winning their first five games in 1996.

Arizona (1-3, 0-1) lost its conference opener and is off to a rough start in Coach Mike Stoops’ second season, with a trip to No. 1 USC next week.

Ayoob completed 14 of 20 passes for 137 yards and Justin Forsett ran for 74 yards for Cal.

Ayoob also had two key scrambles on touchdown drives and showed off his mobility on his touchdown throw, reversing field before connecting with Robert Jordan on a 39-yard score that made it 21-0 midway through the third quarter.

Oregon 44, Stanford 20 -- Kellen Clemens threw for 393 yards and three touchdowns at Palo Alto, and the Ducks gave Coach Mike Bellotti his 50th Pac-10 win.

Clemens became the fourth Oregon quarterback to surpass 7,000 total offensive yards in a career as the Ducks (4-1, 1-1) rebounded from last week’s loss to USC.

Trent Edwards threw for 156 yards and a touchdown for Stanford (1-2, 0-1).
