Book to detail flawed report
A book about CBS’ airing of a flawed story last fall about President Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard, written by a former CBS producer who was fired in the fallout, will hit stores next month.
“Truth and Duty: The Press, the President and the Privilege of Power,” written by former producer Mary Mapes and published by St. Martin’s Press, is scheduled to be released Nov. 8. The 384-page, first-person account will detail Mapes’ role in the story, which raised questions about whether Bush fulfilled his Vietnam-era service. CBS eventually apologized for relying on documents that the network admitted it could not authenticate.
In an excerpt posted on Amazon.com, Mapes writes that she was “shocked at the ferocity of the attack” on the piece and “terrified at CBS’ lack of preparedness in defending us.”
