Red Wings Stop Flyers
Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk each scored twice to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday in Detroit, the only scheduled meeting between two of the NHL’s top teams.
Steve Yzerman assisted on the final goal, moving past Hall of Famer Gordie Howe for seventh place on the NHL’s all-time list with his 1,050th assist.
The Flyers finished an 11-game trip, the longest in team history, at 8-2-1.
N.Y. Rangers 5, Edmonton 4 -- Jaromir Jagr snapped a shot past Edmonton goalie Jussi Markkanen 14 seconds into overtime to lift the Rangers past the Oilers on Mark Messier night at Madison Square Garden.
Messier’s No. 11 was retired by the Rangers before the game.
N.Y. Islanders 3, Calgary 2 -- Rick DiPietro made 28 saves for the host Islanders to help Brad Shaw win his first game as an NHL head coach. Shaw replaced the fired Steve Stirling before the game.
Dallas 4, Washington 1 -- Jason Arnott had two goals and an assist, goaltender Marty Turco rebounded from two miserable starts with 26 saves, and the host Stars stretched their winning streak to five games.
San Jose 2, Ottawa 0 -- Evgeni Nabokov got his first shutout of the season and Patrick Marleau and Nils Ekman scored to help the visiting Sharks extend their winning streak to five games.
Phoenix 2, Buffalo 1 -- Geoff Sanderson scored the only goal in the shootout as the visiting Coyotes ended a losing streak at four games.
Florida 3, St. Louis 1 -- Olli Jokinen and Joe Nieuwendyk scored in the first period for the host Panthers.
Nathan Horton also scored for Florida, 8-1-1 in its last 10 games at home.
