Cal Beats No. 10 Washington

Leon Powe and Ayinde Ubaka combined to make five free throws in the final 36 seconds, and host California held off a late rally to end No. 10 Washington’s four-game winning streak with a 71-69 victory Thursday night.

Powe posted his fourth straight double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. The Golden Bears got a big stop when Huskies’ leading scorer Brandon Roy missed an off-balance 10-footer with about 20 seconds left that would have tied the score.

Washington’s Ryan Appleby had tied the score by making his fifth three-pointer with 36 seconds left, but the sloppy Huskies (16-3, 5-3 Pac-10) couldn’t overcome 18 turnovers. Cal’s student section charged the court in jubilation when the final buzzer sounded.

Omar Wilkes made two free throws with 1:30 left and finished with 15 points on six-of-eight shooting despite foul trouble. Ubaka added 15 points and seven assists and Cal held the nation’s top-scoring team in check for much of the game.

Roy finished with 23 points, nine assists and five rebounds for the Huskies, who looked nothing like the team that won by 33 points at Cal last season.

Roy twice pulled Washington within three in the final 2:06 and made a three-pointer with under a second left.

The Bears (11-6, 5-3) improved to 8-1 at home thanks to heads-up play and hustle and kept Washington from winning its first three conference road games for the first time since 1998.

Cal ended a three-game losing streak in the series and avenged an embarrassing 106-73 home defeat from last season in which Washington made a school-record 16 three-pointers on the way to its highest point total in an opposing arena.

Stanford 69, Washington State 59 -- Matt Haryasz had 22 points and nine rebounds, scoring more than 20 points for the fourth straight game and eighth time this season as the Cardinal (9-7, 5-3 Pac-10) won its seventh consecutive home game and fifth in its last six overall.

Josh Akognon scored 15 points to lead the Cougars (9-8, 2-6), who have lost five straight since beating Washington. Kyle Weaver added 14 points and Robbie Cowgill had 11.

Washington State guard Rodney Edgerson missed the game after aggravating a back injury. Stanford forward Peter Prowitt returned to the court after sitting out two games because of a sore lower back.
