Spying program puts the focus on Bush

Re “In Long Address, Bush Defends Spying Program,” Jan. 24

I’m getting so sick and tired of the president’s lack of respect for the Constitution and for the people who have tolerated his presidency up until this point. I’m fed up with his excuses and misinformation that only seem to serve his personal agenda, built on the concept of “might is right” or “right is might.” If he can’t work within our laws, then let’s find someone who can. This is not the Wild West. He is not our king. He works for the people, and he’s not doing his job.

The question should not be, “Do we agree that the president should monitor phone calls of suspected terrorists?” It should be, “Should there be appropriate judicial oversight when monitoring phone calls?” If the law does not allow enough flexibility, change the law. For those who support the president, remember, someday there will be an administration that you don’t support. When that day comes, you too would want appropriate judicial oversight of the executive branch. You would want and demand that our elected officials respect our constitutional guarantees.

The White House wants to paint the Democrats as being soft on terror, or was it spies? But they are joined by quite a few Republicans who question the president’s power to abrogate the Constitution by claiming what he says makes it the law. Wow! Guess who is soft on the law, soft on the Constitution and, indeed, soft on ethics.
