Bryan Twins Win Final in Australia

Twins Bob and Mike Bryan of Camarillo finally ended their frustration at the Australian Open, winning the doubles title today. The top-seeded Bryans defeated seventh-seeded Martin Damm of the Czech Republic and Leander Paes of India, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, and dropped serve only once.

“I had nothing left in my body by the end of that match,” Bob Bryan said. “It was so emotional.”

They had lost the last two doubles finals at the Australian Open, to Wayne Black and Kevin Ullyett last year, and to Michael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro in 2004.

This was their fifth straight Grand Slam tournament final, and they’ve now won back-to-back majors, having taken the U.S. Open in September. The Bryans have won three Slams together and 27 titles.

The Bryans will next appear in Southern California at the first round of the Davis Cup featuring the United States against Romania at La Jolla, Feb. 10-12.
