The West Coast premiere of John Patrick Shanley’s drama “Defiance” will open the first half of the Pasadena Playhouse’s 2007 season.

A morality tale with a military setting, “Defiance” (Jan. 19-Feb. 18) is the second in Shanley’s intended trilogy that began with the Tony- and Pulitzer-winning “Doubt.” That play had its West Coast premiere at the playhouse in 2005.

The season will continue with the jazz- and blues-infused “Cuttin’ Up,” Charles Randolph-Wright’s adaptation of Craig Marberry’s book set in an African American barbershop, a co-production with Cleveland Playhouse (March 16-April 15). The third offering will be W. Somerset Maugham’s comedy “The Constant Wife” (May 11-June 10).

“I love the fact that you never really know what to expect at this theater,” said Sheldon Epps, Pasadena Playhouse’s artistic director. “I’m proud that we can cover so many theatrical bases and deliver with artistry.”
