Bonds Is Hitless in Giants’ 8-3 Loss
The backdrop to Barry Bonds in left field was a section-long banner that read, “Ruth did it on hot dogs and beer,” and the soundtrack was chants of “just re-tire!”
Bonds was hitless in three at-bats and was walked intentionally Friday night at Citizens Bank Park, where the Philadelphia Phillies homered five times and defeated the San Francisco Giants, 8-3.
Before a near-sellout crowd, Bonds remained at 712 home runs, in third place all-time. Babe Ruth is next at 714. Hank Aaron hit 755.
Although Bonds has said he’s undaunted by the routinely negative reaction outside of the Giants’ AT&T; Park, he is batting .194 and has one home run and one run batted in in 31 at-bats on the road.
Even the prospect of pitching around Bonds appeared to get easier Friday night. Moises Alou, who bats behind Bonds, severely sprained his right ankle chasing a third-inning foul ball and is expected to go on the disabled list today.
When Bonds arrived in the right-field corner to lend support to Alou, who was taken off in a cart, the fans on the rail above heckled Bonds.
Manager Felipe Alou said, “I believe that’s cheap. Very cheap. I believe that’s not America.”
Bonds declined to speak to the media before the game and had left the clubhouse by the time reporters arrived afterward.
