He Gets a Kick Out of Cool, Glamorous Vegas
Cole Porter may have written “I Get a Kick Out of You” in 1934, but in 2006 I got a kick out of your excellent Vegas coverage that entailed many different facets of Vegas life (The Vegas Issue, Nov. 5). I especially enjoyed the article by Mark Childress (“His Mission: Blow $1,000”), which described how he continually failed to lose the allotted $1,000 given to him to gamble away, but finally decided to give it away to homeless people on Fremont Street.
I also discovered that Mr. Las Vegas, a.k.a., Wayne Newton, is the same age as I am, and that both of us did something wild in 1959 (“Mr. Las Vegas Has a Bad Knee,” by Martin J. Smith). He arrived in Vegas the year that I graduated from high school. I guess I just proceeded with my mundane life. I frequent Vegas several times a year and found this article extremely interesting and insightful.
One thing I regret never having done was see the Rat Pack perform live in Sin City. The entertainment Vegas has now is fantastic, and I urge anyone who has been waiting to catch a particular performer to do it before it is too late. I took my own advice last year, when my son Ryan and I went to see Danny Gans perform. Again, thanks for the great articles on Vegas.
