Justice’s ouster spurs more rallies
A rally by about 4,000 lawyers and political activists opposed to President Pervez Musharraf’s removal of Pakistan’s chief justice has put pressure on the leader to end his eight-year rule.
The rally in Islamabad was the biggest street protest yet in the capital after Musharraf’s removal of Ifitkhar Mohammed Chaudhry, the court’s independent-minded chief justice, on March 9.
Thousands more attended rallies in Lahore, Karachi and Quetta.
The government says it acted after receiving allegations that the judge had abused his position.
Critics denounce what they claim was a plot to intimidate the court.
