Mayor approves park smoking ban
Standing in fire-scarred Griffith Park, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Wednesday signed an ordinance banning smoking in all city parks.
Prompted by concerns about the health risks of secondhand smoke and potential fire dangers, the City Council on Aug. 1 voted 12 to 0 for the measure, which extends an existing ban on smoking at city beaches and some parks to nearly 390 playgrounds and recreational areas.
The measure, which takes effect Sept. 17, carries fines of $250 per violation.
Smoking will still be allowed on city-operated golf courses and in some designated areas, including the Los Angeles Zoo.
