USC, UCLA advance

Second-seeded USC posted its fourth shutout of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer tournament, beating third-seeded West Virginia, 1-0, Friday night at Morgantown, W.Va.

In so doing, the Trojans (18-3-2), who tied a school record with their 14th shutout of the season, earned their first berth to the NCAA College Cup, which starts next Friday at College Station, Texas.

They will play top-ranked UCLA in the semifinals. The Bruins (20-1-2) advanced by beating visiting Portland, 3-2, in two overtimes.

Danesha Adams scored the game-winning goal in the 104th minute. She also scored the Bruins’ first goal in the 51st minute.

Kasey Johnson, a freshman defender from Pasadena La Salle High, scored USC’s winning goal for the second game in a row -- this one coming on a header in the 63rd minute.

Fifth-seeded USC defeated Pepperdine, 30-22, 30-23, 31-29, at the Galen Center in the first round of the NCAA Division I women’s volleyball tournament.

The Trojans (26-4) will play Long Beach State tonight at 7 in the second round. Alexis Crimes had 21 kills for the 49ers (26-6), who advanced by beating Nevada Las Vegas, 30-20, 28-30, 30-27, 23-30, 15-10.

Kaitlin Sather posted a match-high 11 kills and Jessica Fine had 18 digs to lead eighth-seeded UCLA past Alabama A&M;, 30-9, 30-14, 30-13, at Clemson, S.C.

The Bruins (21-10) will play Clemson today in the second round. The Tigers (29-3) advanced by beating Alabama, 30-25, 30-27, 31-33, 30-26.

UCLA set a school record for fewest number of points given up in a three-game match since the advent of rally scoring in 2001. The Bruins gave up only 36 points, seven fewer than their previous low of 43.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo beat Xavier, 30-14, 30-19, 30-25, at Athens, Ohio. The 16th-seeded Mustangs (22-7) will next play Purdue (19-13), which beat Ohio, 25-30, 30-24, 30-23, 30-22.
