UCLA beats Oregon; USC defeats St. John’s
Ali Daley led UCLA with 15 kills and 13 digs as the eighth-seeded Bruins defeated Oregon, 30-23, 30-19, 28-30, 30-24, Friday night in the third round of the NCAA Division I women’s volleyball tournament at Stanford’s Maples Pavilion.
The Bruins (23-10) will play the winner of the late match between top-seeded Stanford (29-2) and 16th-seeded Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (23-7) tonight at 8:30.
Kaitlin Sather had 13 kills and 17 digs, freshman Dicey McGraw had 13 kills and nine digs and Rachell Johnson posted 12 kills while hitting at a .688 clip.
Kills by McGraw and Sather gave UCLA a 22-19 lead in the fifth game. The Bruins didn’t relinquish the lead the rest of the game.
Freshman Katie Mills nearly had a double-double with nine kills and nine blocks, while Nellie Spicer had a great all-around match with seven kills, 55 assists and 14 digs.
Jessica Fine recorded a team-high 26 digs.
Gorana Maricic led the Ducks (22-11) with 30 kills and 14 digs.
All-American outside hitter Asia Kacsor had 25 kills, including five in Game 5, to lead fifth-seeded USC past 12th-seeded St. John’s, 30-27, 30-22, 26-30, 24-30, 15-10, at Gainesville, Fla.
Kacsor became the first Trojan to record 600 kills in a season, adding to her team record. She now has 612.
The win was USC’s 100th in postseason play as it improved to 100-27. The Trojans also improved to 8-0 in five-game matches this season.
The Trojans received strong performances from outside hitters Diane Copenhagen,, who recorded 18 kills and 14 digs, and Jessica Gysin, who had 16 kills and three solo blocks.
Hui Ping Huang led the Red Storm (33-4) with 29 kills, four service aces, five digs and four block assists .
The Trojans next play fourth-seeded Texas (27-3), which defeated host Florida, 30-27, 29-31, 30-16, 30-15.
