Don’t burn grape stakes, EPA warns
As temperatures drop, the Environmental Protection Agency warned Coachella Valley residents Friday to avoid using discarded grape stakes as firewood because of a high risk of inhaling dangerous fumes.
Grape stakes are treated with chromium, copper and arsenic, which can cause severe respiratory problems if inhaled. Burning concentrates these chemicals in the smoke and ash, according to EPA officials, who said inhalation could cause poisoning and serious health problems.
Coachella Valley residents looking to light a fire should use wood that has not been chemically treated or products labeled “safe for wood fires,” officials said.
