Free throws give Northridge win
BROOKINGS, S.D. — Thomas Shewmake’s two free throws with 21 seconds left proved to be the difference Tuesday night as Cal State Northridge defeated South Dakota State, 64-63.
Calvin Chitwood came off the bench to lead the Matadors (13-14) with 18 points. Shewmake finished with 13 points. Kai Williams and Jose Frias each scored a game-high 19 points for South Dakota State (5-22).
Northridge rallied from a 50-45 deficit to regain the lead with less than six minutes left and held on until the final minute, when a basket by Frias and a free throw gave South Dakota State a 63-62 lead. Shewmake then was fouled in the post and made two free throws. The Jackrabbits got the ball to Frias, whose shot rimmed out in the final seconds.
