Gateway warns of battery hazard

* Lithium-ion battery packs shipped with some Gateway Inc. notebook computers pose a fire danger, leading to a voluntary recall by Gateway and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The battery packs can overheat and pose a fire hazard, the commission said. About 14,000 battery packs that were shipped as the primary or spare power sources for some Gateway 400VTX and 450ROG series notebooks, and are identified by part number 6500760 or 6500761, were recalled.

* Michelin & Cie. recalled nearly 20,000 French-made Pilot Power motorcycle tires for a potential defect to the tread. The recall applies to tires of 120/70 ZR 17 size that were sold in the U.S. and Canada, Michelin said. The tires are identifiable by the labels “Made in France” and “DOT 6UCW 980T” or “DOT 6UCW 979T.” Motorists whose cars have the tires can call Michelin at (866) 324-2835 to arrange for a replacement, the tire maker said.

* About 19,000 butterfly necklaces, imported by GeoCentral, were recalled because the necklaces’ metal clasps contains high levels of lead, which is toxic if ingested by young children. The item has a multicolored butterfly pendant hanging from a 16-inch bead necklace. Souvenir and gift stores nationwide sold the item.
