A shadowy Palestinian group threatened to kill BBC correspondent Alan Johnston, whom it kidnapped in the Gaza Strip months ago, and added freedom for an Al Qaeda-linked prisoner to its list of demands.

In a statement e-mailed to reporters, the Army of Islam demanded that Abu Mohammed Maqdisi be released from prison in Jordan. Maqdisi is known as the spiritual mentor of Abu Musab Zarqawi, who was killed in a U.S. airstrike last year in Iraq.

Earlier, the group demanded freedom for Sajida Rishawi, an Iraqi sentenced to death in Jordan for her role in a 2005 hotel bombing that killed 60 people in Amman, the capital.
