L.A. Marathon: We love it
“I Love L.A.” will be the refrain as the Randy Newman anthem will once again provide the musical accompaniment for the gunshot start of the Los Angeles Marathon early Sunday. More than 25,000 runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes are expected to participate in this 22nd annual event.
This year’s marathon route will start in Universal City near the intersection of Lankershim and Cahuenga boulevards, weave down through Hollywood on Vine Street and Rossmore Avenue to 6th Street; bolt into the heart of downtown and finally end near Flower and 5th streets.
Organizers claim the L.A. Marathon offers more on-route live performances than any marathon in the world. More than 75 entertainment stages, centers and community festivals are planned along the route. Musical acts of various stripes, including classic rock, hip-hop, mariachi and salsa, will be performing.
At Flower and 3rd streets, a finish line festival for the runners and their families will feature live entertainment, information booths, food and refreshments. The marathon and its two adjunct events -- a 5K Run/Walk and the L.A. Bike Tour also scheduled for Sunday but at different start times -- are expected to attract more than 40,000 participants.
Los Angeles Marathon, starting at Lankershim and Cahuenga boulevards, Universal City. 7:45 a.m. Sunday. $105 registration fee. (310) 444-5544; www.lamarathon.com
