School spending
ERIN AUBRY KAPLAN’S “review” of the new book “Two Americas, Two Educations” by Paul F. Cummins was less a critique than a publicist’s promotional piece [“On a Money Trail to Fix Ailing Schools,” March 20]. A little research would have provided some balance to this totally unquestioning review.
Contrary to Cummins’ tract, there are numerous academic studies demonstrating that increased public school funding does not lead to increased public school performance.
Taxpayers do not want to spend substantially more on public schools because they are consistently unsuccessful, because they are throttled by intractable teachers unions that protect bad teachers and because they are lacking in accountability.
