Romero leads Senior PGA Championship by a stroke

Eduardo Romero shot a four-under 68 Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over Joe Ozaki in the Senior PGA Championship on Kiawah Island, S.C., at the Ocean Course, which is staging its highest profile event since the 1991 Ryder Cup.

Romero birdied all four par-fives, landing his approaches inside five feet each time. He looked as if he’d have a bogey-free round but missed a two-foot par putt on No. 18.

Anthony Kim birdied the last six holes -- the PGA Tour’s longest birdie streak this season -- for a seven-under 63 and a one-stroke lead in the suspended first round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in Fort Worth.

Kim was among 57 players -- half of the 114-player field -- to finish play before a thunderstorm flooded the course.

Charlotta Sorenstam shot a bogey-free eight-under 64, matching her career best, to take a one-shot lead over Beth Bader after the first round of the LPGA Corning Classic in Corning, N.Y.

Englishmen Justin Rose and Paul Broadhurst shot six-under 66s to share the first-round lead in the BMW PGA Championship, the PGA European Tour’s flagship event, at Wentworth in Virginia Water, England.

UCLA’s women’s golf team trails first-place Duke by 13 and second-place Purdue by five after three rounds at the NCAA championship in Daytona Beach, Fla. Pepperdine and USC are tied for seventh, and UC Irvine is 20th. The final round is today.

USC’s Paola Moreno (70) was second at one under in the individual competition, five shots behind Purdue’s Christel Boeljon.

The Cal State San Bernardino men’s team fell from 10th to 11th after the third round of the NCAA Division II championship in Allendale, Mich.

Roddick loses to

wild card in Austria

Second-seeded Andy Roddick and defending champion Nikolay Davydenko lost their quarterfinal matches at the Hypo Group International in Poertschach, Austria.

Roddick lost to wild card Gael Monfils, 7-5, 6-3, and Davydenko fell to Juan Monaco, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-4. Fourth-seeded Lleyton Hewitt advanced after defeating Diego Hartfield, 6-2, 6-2, and will play Monfils in the semifinals. Luis Horna beat Albert Montanes, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (2), 6-1.

Maria Sharapova beat Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0, to advance to the semifinals of the Istanbul Cup in Turkey.

Top-seeded Sharapova will meet Aravane Rezai in the last warmup before the French Open.

Top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo and second-seeded Jelena Jankovic reached the semifinals of the Strasbourg International without dropping a set in Strasbourg, France.

Mardy Fish will miss the French Open after injuring his foot kicking a football.

Fish and his U.S. teammates at the World Team Cup visited NFL Europa team Rhein Fire on Wednesday.

He apparently sprained ligaments in his foot while trying to kick a field goal.

The 31st-ranked Fish has returned to the United States for treatment, ruling him out of the French Open, which begins on Sunday.

Bob and Mike Bryan of Camarillo have committed to the 81st Countrywide Classic, July 16-22 at UCLA, joining Tommy Haas, Fernando Gonzalez and Andy Murray.

Former Clipper James

is sentenced in drug case

A former NBA player was sentenced to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to selling crack cocaine to an undercover police officer last summer.

Henry Charles James, 41, of Fort Wayne, Ind., pleaded guilty to one charge of distribution of a controlled substance. The prison term will be followed by four years of supervised release, Assistant U.S. Atty. Anthony Geller said.

James played in the 1990s for Cleveland, Sacramento, Utah, the Clippers, Houston and Atlanta.

Hall of Fame boxer Michael Carbajal was arrested for allegedly threatening a police officer, authorities in Phoenix said. The 39-year-old was booked into jail on suspicion of threatening and intimidating a police officer and a liquor violation, police said. He was later released on bond.

St. Bonaventure alumnus Booker signs with Miami

Running back Lorenzo Booker was one of three draft picks who signed four-year contracts with the Miami Dolphins.

Booker, a former Florida State star who attended Ventura St. Bonaventure High, was the Dolphins’ third-round choice. They also signed punter Brandon Fields and linebacker Abraham Wright, both seventh-round picks.

Micheal Ray Richardson, a former NBA player whose anti-Semitic comments to a newspaper last season drew a suspension from the CBA, was hired as coach of the Oklahoma City Cavalry.

Richardson, 52, was cleared by the league this month and allowed to return to coaching, but Albany had already decided not to renew his contract. Richardson said he has a lawsuit pending against the newspaper but is looking forward to a new start and another chance to win a championship.

Chief executive and skipper Chris Dickson resigned from BMW Oracle Racing, four days after the American entry made an early exit from the America’s Cup. Dickson was at the helm for all but one of BMW Oracle Racing’s Louis Vuitton Cup semifinal match races against Luna Rossa of Italy. The Italians won the series, 5-1.

England’s Chelsea will play Mexico’s Club America on July 14 at Stanford Stadium in an exhibition soccer match.
