Authorities find missing hiker on Mt. Baldy
A Rancho Dominguez man who has been missing on Mt. Baldy since Saturday has been found, a San Bernardino County sheriff’s spokeswoman said Wednesday.
The hiker was identified as Kevin Gray, 46, spokeswoman Jodie Miller said in a telephone interview. A co-worker became concerned about Gray when he failed to show up for work after the holiday weekend.
Gray was found in the San Antonio Canyon area. He appeared to be well but might have a broken ankle, authorities said.
At a news conference, Gray described his ordeal and said he used duct tape to protect his ankle as he slid down the mountain. He blew a whistle to attract rescuers, he said.
When told that a woman who identified herself as a girlfriend had called authorities to start the rescue effort, he smiled and said, “I didn’t know I had a girlfriend!”
Gray took up hiking about six months ago, his friends said.
