Over at the S Bar
ADJOINING the new Hollywood outpost of the restaurant Katsuya, the Philippe Starck-designed S Bar is darkly glamorous. The 2,300-square-foot cocktail lounge’s plus-sized, plus-sign-shaped white center table is topped with Olde English candelabra holding beeswax tapers and surrounded by mismatched seats in classic shapes, including the saber-legged Klismos chair, the Louis XV dining chair and a French tub-backed lounger. The walls, draped with blow-ups of Patrick Tourneboeuf’s photographs taken during the restoration of Chateau de Versailles, have a trompe l’oeil twist: One appears to be a hallway of wallpapered rooms stretching to infinity; another has arches cut out of the photo mural that leads to the powder rooms. As for the mood lighting: A melange of table lamps hangs upside down from the ceiling. S Bar creative director Theresa Fatino says it’s a parlor trick that requires rewiring and support cables to pull off. In other words, if you want to imitate the look, call an electrician. 6304 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles; (323) 957-2279.
