ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Rookie Trent Edwards gave Buffalo’s sputtering offense a spark and, more important, led the Bills to their first victory.

Buffalo’s banged-up defense proved stout too, keyed by Terrence McGee’s interception that helped seal a 17-14 win Sunday over the New York Jets.

Making his first career start in place of injured J.P. Losman, Edwards went 22 for 28 for 234 yards passing, including a one-yard touchdown to Michael Gaines with seven minutes left. The score came on a fourth-and-one, after the Bills initially ran their field-goal unit out before changing their mind during a timeout.

With the rookie third-round draft pick calling the signals, the Bills produced their most points, total yards (304), yards passing and first downs (19) of the season, and helped erase the frustrations of an 0-3 start.

Jets quarterback Chad Pennington finished 32 for 39 for 290 yards passing, but his team failed to build off last week’s 31-28 win over Miami. New York is off to its second 1-3 start in three years.

Quoteworthy: “For all that hard work and extra hours I put in, it was something that was very enjoyable.” -- Trent Edwards, Bills quarterback
