Cowboys assistant Wilson is suspended

Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson was suspended for five games by the NFL on Saturday for buying and using performance-enhancing substances.

Wilson, a 48-year-old former NFL quarterback, also was fined $100,000. He said he took the drugs to try to “improve the quality of my life” after living with diabetes for more than 20 years. He acknowledged he acted without “proper medical supervision.”

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Wilson would return to his job after his suspension ends Oct. 9.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Wilson’s suspension and the suspension Friday of New England safety Rodney Harrison stemmed from the investigation by the Albany (N.Y.) district attorney’s office. Authorities there have been looking into an Internet ring involving performance-enhancing drugs and allegedly involving athletes from a number of sports.

Aiello said the third NFL person involved in the investigation was Richard Ryzde, one of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ team doctors. He had earlier been fired by the team.

The reduction of NFL rosters to the 53-man limit affected several notable players.

Defensive lineman Richard Seymour was put on the physically unable to perform list by New England, meaning he must miss at least the first six games of the regular season. The Patriots also cut quarterback Vinny Testaverde.

Jacksonville did the expected, cutting quarterback Byron Leftwich, who was the No. 7 overall pick in the 2003 draft and the team’s starting quarterback for nearly every game since then. David Garrard becomes Jacksonville’s starting quarterback.

Another former starting quarterback, Tampa Bay’s Chris Simms, survived the cuts. Simms missed most of last season because of a spleen injury.

Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith made the Baltimore Ravens as the third-string quarterback.

The Cincinnati Bengals acquired quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick from the St. Louis Rams and released No. 2 quarterback Doug Johnson. Johnson was dumped a day after he threw two interceptions in a 14-6 exhibition loss to Indianapolis.

The Philadelphia Eagles cut former Olympic skier Jeremy Bloom along with Dirk Johnson, the team’s punter last season. Bloom spent last season on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury. Johnson was beaten out by Sav Rocca, a former Australian football player.

Kansas City put running back Priest Holmes on the reserve/non-football injury list. After their first six games, the Chiefs will have a three-week window to activate their career rushing leader.

Oakland released third-round pick Quentin Moses and veteran fullback Zack Crockett.

Andre Wadsworth’s comeback with the New York Jets ended. The 32-year-old linebacker hadn’t played in the NFL since 2000 because of several knee injuries.

Detroit running back Kevin Jones was removed from the physically unable to perform list. A day-to-day timetable was set for his return.

The Cleveland Browns cut quarterback Ken Dorsey, and the New York Giants released quarterback Tim Hasselbeck, who lost the No. 3 job to Anthony Wright.

Tennessee released starting free safety Lamont Thompson and quarterback Tim Rattay.

Veteran cornerback Aaron Glenn’s contract was terminated by the Cowboys, who also put kicker Martin Gramatica on injured reserve. The team also cut quarterback Matt Moore.

Tight end Chris Cooley signed a six-year, $30-million contract extension with the Washington Redskins. . . . The Houston Texans will trade former first-round pick Jason Babin to the Seattle Seahawks for strong safety Michael Boulware.
