A fast start sends Boise State to victory
Ian Johnson rushed for 111 yards and three touchdowns Thursday night to lead Boise State to a 38-16 victory over Southern Mississippi at Boise, Idaho.
The Broncos (3-1) built a 28-3 lead late in the first half before the Golden Eagles (2-2) scored a touchdown in the final minute.
Southern Mississippi scored again early in the third quarter when Jeremy Young tossed a 23-yard scoring pass to tight end Shawn Nelson, cutting the Broncos’ lead to 28-16.
But Johnson answered on the next possession, taking the ball off right tackle to score from two yards out to cap a decisive seven-play, 79-yard drive. Boise State finished with 506 yards of offense.
Corey Leonard threw for three touchdowns -- all in the second half -- to lead Arkansas State (2-2) to a 35-31 comeback victory over Memphis (1-3) at Jonesboro, Ark.
Louisville linebacker Willie A. Williams was kicked off the team, less than 24 hours after his arrest on a marijuana possession charge.
Williams was one of the top recruits in the country two years ago, but legal problems in high school -- 11 arrests -- nearly cost him a scholarship to Miami. He never panned out with the Hurricanes and spent last year at West Los Angeles College.
Ohio State quarterback Antonio Henton, suspended indefinitely earlier this week after being arrested and accused of offering a female police officer $20 for sex, will be permitted to begin practicing with the team next week, Coach Jim Tressel said.
