Look around -- art is everywhere
Is navigating L.A.’s sprawling art scene making you dizzy? Buck up little aesthete -- Los Angeles Art Weekend debuts Thursday through next Sunday with a slew of fresh arts and cultural events, including expanded hours at the new Broad Contemporary Art Museum, a solo concert by singer-songwriter Iris DeMent at the Getty Center and the first “pop-up” outpost of New York’s cutting-edge gallery Storefront for Art and Architecture.
Storefront director Joseph Grima says he plans to erect temporary gallery shops in unexpected spaces around the world but decided to start here because “in the architectural world L.A. is a global point of reference.” Storefront’s first pop-up exhibition, in the old Paper Chase Printing pressroom on Sunset Boulevard, will be “CCCP: Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed.”
The show will be one of Art Weekend’s several dozen events and exhibitions. “We want to inspire people to participate regularly in the cultural landscape of L.A.,” says Bettina Korek, founder of the event’s producer, ForYourArt, which also publishes a quarterly map and cultural guide for the city.
