at Toronto 3, Detroit 2: Dustin McGowan won for the first time this season. He pitched a season-high seven innings, yielding two runs and seven hits. The 26-year-old right-hander improved to 9-3 in his last 14 starts at Rogers Centre. “Their guy was real good,” Tigers Manager Jim Leyland said. “We didn’t get a whole lot. We had a couple of chances and we couldn’t get a big hit.” The Tigers are 0-10 when they score four runs or less.

at Minnesota 3, Cleveland 0: Justin Morneau hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Nick Blackburn made it stand up with 7 2/3 solid innings. Blackburn, who hit one batter and gave up eight hits without a walk, earned his first major league win. “I felt we put up some good at-bats, the type of at-bats where you wouldn’t expect a zero to be up there,” Cleveland Manager Eric Wedge said.

at Boston 5, Texas 3: Manny Ramirez hit a two-run homer after David Ortiz tied the score with an RBI single in the eighth inning. With one out, Dustin Pedroia doubled to left. Ortiz followed with a single off the glove of diving second baseman Ian Kinsler, scoring Pedroia. Ramirez then hit an 0-1 pitch over the left-field wall for his sixth homer of the season and 496th of his career.

at Baltimore 6, New York 0: Brian Burres and Jim Johnson combined on a six-hitter. Burres gave up five hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings, and Johnson yielded just one hit the rest of the way to pick up the first save of his career. Ian Kennedy (0-2) had another rough outing for the Yankees, giving up four runs and five hits with five walks to raise his earned-run average to 9.64.

at Oakland 6, Kansas City 5: Daric Barton, whose leadoff double keyed a three-run fifth inning, singled and scored the tying run in the sixth, then hit a run-scoring triple in the seventh.

at Tampa Bay 5, Chicago 0: White Sox designated hitter Jim Thome grounded out in all three plate appearances. He had reached base safely in all of his previous 26 games at Tropicana Field.
