Cleveland 4, at Toronto 2: Paul Byrd pitched a six-hitter to win his fourth consecutive start. He had retired 12 consecutive batters and 21 of 22 when Lyle Overbay hit a two-out single in the ninth. Overbay was thrown out to end the game trying to stretch it into a double.
at Detroit 10, Oakland 2: Miguel Cabrera homered twice and drove in four runs for the Tigers, who won for only the second time in nine games. Cabrera broke open a one-run game with a three-run shot in the seventh inning, giving the Tigers a 6-2 lead
at Baltimore 9, Texas 0: Daniel Cabrera shut down the Rangers for six innings, and the Orioles got a homer and four RBIs from Melvin Mora, who has 26 RBIs in 20 games since the All-Star break. Cabrera, who yielded four hits, was 1-6 with a 6.33 earned-run average in eight previous appearances against the Rangers.
Boston 6, at Chicago 2: The White Sox’s already shaky pitching depth took a tumble in the second inning when Jose Contreras left the game with a likely season-ending injury. He ruptured his Achilles’ tendon trying to cover first on a grounder. He collapsed on the field and needed help to leave the game.
Tampa Bay 8, at Seattle 7 (11 innings): Dioner Navarro’s sacrifice fly scored Ben Zobrist in the 11th.
Minnesota 7, at Kansas City 3: The win, combined with the Chicago’s loss to Boston, moved the Twins a half-game ahead of Chicago in the Central Division.
at Angels 11, New York 4: The Angels improved to a season-high 30 games over .500.
