Chivas USA is beaten by Kansas City, 3-2

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Claudio Lopez and Davy Arnaud each had a goal and an assist and the Kansas City Wizards beat Chivas USA, 3-2, Saturday night.

Sasha Victorine scored his first goal in almost a year for the Wizards, who broke a three-match winless streak. Carey Talley scored two late goals for Chivas USA, which has not won in more than a month.

Kansas City (6-6-7) had gone 0-2-1 since beating New York, 2-1, on July 10. Chivas (6-8-4) has lost twice and drawn once since defeating San Jose, 1-0, on July 5.

A victory would have moved Chivas USA over the Galaxy in the West. It remained in fifth place with 22 points, one behind.

Victorine’s goal in the 22nd minute, his first since Aug. 22 against Chicago, gave the Wizards a 1-0 lead.

Lopez took Matt Marquess’ pass on the right side and sent a cross into the area, where Victorine knocked a sprawling header past keeper Zach Thornton from the penalty spot.

In the 44th minute, Kerry Zavagnin sent the ball over the top to Arnaud, who crossed to Lopez at the spot for a one-timer that made it 2-0.

Arnaud put Kansas City ahead, 3-0, in the 58th minute. He took a through ball from Aaron Hohlbein, chipped over the onrushing Thornton, then ran past the keeper and nodded the ball into the goal.

Talley scored on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute, after Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman fouled Atiba Harris in the area.

His header off Justin Braun’s corner kick in the 82nd minute got Chivas to within 3-2, and Hartman had to make a save on Keith Savage’s blast in the 87th minute to preserve the win.

Chivas Coach Preki was serving the second game of a two-game suspension, and the team played without two key midfielders -- Sacha Kljestan is in China playing for the U.S. Olympic team, and Paolo Nagamura is serving a one-game suspension for accumulated yellow cards.
